Thickness and Density Rules

Max thickness: 7/16" under most residential carpet
Carpet manufacturers specify a maximum pad thickness. Thicker pads cause the carpet to flex more with each footstep, breaking down the backing faster. Going thicker is not always better.

Density matters more than thickness
A 7/16" pad at 8 oz/sqft density outperforms a 1/2" pad at 5 oz/sqft. When comparing padding specs, prioritise density (oz/sqft) over thickness.

Berber/loop carpet: thin and firm only
Use rubber waffle or 3/8" rebond under any loop pile carpet. Thick, soft pads cause loop carpet to buckle and ripple. Check the manufacturer spec for your carpet before choosing padding.

Radiant heat floors: use felt
Foam pads are poor thermal conductors — they insulate your heated floor from the room. If you have in-floor radiant heat, use felt padding (thinner, denser, conducts heat) or the heat is wasted.
Why Reusing Old Padding Is Almost Always a Mistake
Red flag: If an installer proposes reusing your existing padding to save money, that’s a warning sign. Old padding is compressed (its cushioning value is largely gone), can hold pet accident odours that will migrate into your new carpet, and most carpet manufacturer warranties are void if the carpet is installed over old padding.
